Just like others, 2016 too saw the Khans, the Kumar, the Devgn, the Kapoors all of them coming together for several releases. Not surprisingly, this year too we saw films breaking and making records and amongst them were films like Sultan and Dangal who have won the hearts of masses and critics alike. With the year coming to an end, let’s take a look at Opening Weekend collections of 2016.

Amidst the Top 10 opening weekend collections of 2016, according to the recent reports, topping the chart is Salman Khan starrer Sultan with a collection of Rs. 180.36 crores closely followed by the much talked about Dangal that collected Rs. 107.01 crores. However, with the continuous word of mouth and loads of appreciation pouring in, the Aamir Khan starrer wrestling drama has broken several records recently.

Besides that, the recent trend also includes the high success rates of sports films. The top 3 films include Sultan, Dangal and MS Dhoni– The Untold Story wherein the first two are based on wrestling while the latter is based on cricket. The films have done exceptional business at the box office wherein though we see the ruling of Khans in the first two, the third film based on India’s most favourite skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has Sushant Singh Rajput, comparatively a newbie playing the lead.

Also what needs to be noted is that, as we take a recap in the trends that has been continuing in the past few years, it is the Khans who have majorly dominated the box office. For the past half a decade, it has been Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan who has been retaining their top position in the chart much like this year. Salman Khan starrer Sultan turned out to be the top grosser of the opening weekend of 2016 and it was nothing different in 2015 wherein the list had the Salman Khan starrer Prem Ratan Dhan Payo as the leading grosser on the opening day with a collection of Rs. 129.77 crores closely followed by his yet another film Bajrangi Bhaijaan with a collection of Rs. 102.46 crores.

However, in 2014 and 2013, the top position was taken by Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan with films Happy New Year and Dhoom 3 respectively, considering that 2013 did not have any Salman Khan releases. While HNY collected Rs. 108.86 crores during its Diwali release, the latter which was once again a successful Aamir – Christmas combo like his previous films collected Rs. 107.61 crores during the opening weekend. Though there have been a few years when Salman Khan films haven’t been ruling the charts, 2012 and 2010 reinstated the fact that the superstar Khan wanted to retain his top position with films like Ek Tha Tiger that collected Rs. 100.16 crores and Dabangg that collected Rs. 48.50 crores.
