2016 has seen a plethora of releases both in Bollywood and Hollywood. While some films have been successful and massive, some of them have sunk without a trace. With the recently released Dangal soaring high as the final release of the year, we take a look at the highest Opening Day collections of other films.
In this box office report, we will analyze the top opening day collections of 2016 and understand the trend that has ruled the year by far. Not surprisingly, it is the Salman Khan starrer Sultan that continues to retain its no. 1 position closely followed by the recently released Aamir Khan starrer Dangal. As per the reports, every ruling Khan of Bollywood has a release that has managed to find a place in the top 10 opening day collections of 2016 including the Shah Rukh Khan starrer Fan that holds the fourth position. However, it is Akshay Kumar who seems to be ruling the roost with three major releases finding a place in the Top 10 opening day grossers, starting with Airlift (Rs. 12.35 crores), Rustom (14.11 crores) and Housefull 3 (Rs. 15.21 crores).
Besides this, yet another intriguing factor about the releases of 2016 is the success of sports films. Amidst the top 10 grossers of 2016, the top three films that are Sultan, Dangal and MS Dhoni – The Untold Story are sports films with the last two being inspired by real life sports personalities.
Interestingly, this is not the first time where Salman Khan has gained the top position. In 2015, the superstar had managed to gain the top position with the release of Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, a Diwali release that collected a whopping Rs. 40.35 crores on its opening day. In the past eight years, Salman Khan has ruled the box office on more than one occasion. In 2012, the actor had two major releases Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2. While both managed to enter the top 10 opening day grossers that year, it was Ek Tha Tiger with a collection of Rs. 32.93 crores that gained the first position. Something similar happened in the year 2011, when Salman Khan continued to maintain his first position with Bodyguard as the top opening day grosser with a collection of Rs. 21.60 crores.
However, Salman Khan is yet to break the highest record ever set by a film on its opening day which continues to be the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 2014 release Happy New Year with a collection that amounts to Rs. 44.97 crores.
