So far, 2016 has been a good year for the film industry as far as the overseas numbers are concerned. With production houses exploring the option of overseas markets for films, we have seen an increase in number of Bollywood movies hitting screens across the borders.
In this special report, we take a look at the collections of the Top production houses/distributors. Given below is a list of the Top Distributors in the Overseas markets for the year 2016.
Top Distributors in Overseas
Yash Raj Films – 33.17 mil. USD [Rs. 221.21 crores]
Fox – 16.61 mil. USD [Rs. 110.78 crores]
Eros International – 15.29 mil. USD [Rs. 101.87 crores]
UTV / Disney – 9.66 mil. USD [Rs. 64.85 crores]
While currently Yash Raj Films is in the lead, the production house has an added advantage with the December release of the Ranveer Singh – Vaani Kapoor starrer Befikre that is expected to fare well in the overseas market. While Fox that ranks second might close the gap a bit with their soon to release film Ae Dil Hai Mushkil that is heavy on drama featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Anushka Sharma.
Eros International was ranked no.1 last year clocking revenues of approximately 76.44 mil USD on the back of Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Bajirao Mastani. However this year, Eros that has just two films Rock On 2 and Kahaani 2 that will release, might be the biggest loser with expected collections by the end of the year in the overseas market being pegged at around 20 mil. USD.
On the other hand, UTV/ Disney, though currently fourth might just score a last ball thriller with an ace up their sleeve in the form of the Aamir Khan starrer Dangal that will hit screens in December. The fate of Dangal will in fact eventually decide the winner of 2016 in overseas. In fact, trade sources estimate that Dangal can easily gross around Rs. 30 crores in the overseas to claim the top slot from Yash Raj Films.
Overall, when comparing this year to the last, 2015 saw three production houses viz. Eros International, UTV / Disney and Fox crossing 100 crores. But this year, four studios will achieve the same by the end of December.
