Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma is back with Sarkar 3 which is slated to release tomorrow. The movie has Amitabh Bachchan in the titular role and the film has an additional stellar cast of Manoj Bajpayee, Jackie Shroff, Yami Gautam, Amit Sadh amongst others.
Recently, we caught up with the controversial filmmaker and he talked about Sarkar 3, Big B, Twitter controversies and his future projects.
You are back with the third installment of the Sarkar franchise after almost nine years. What took you so long?
When we did the film, we did not have any idea of making another film in the franchise. But, over the years a lot of people were asking me and Amit Ji about the sequel. The character of Sarkar made such a huge impact. So, in terms of possibilities, we started thinking about it. Two-three years back, I came out with an idea which excited Amit Ji also a lot. Then we started working on the script in the course of the time. So, it happened.
Is there a mention of Aishwarya Rai Bachchan’s character in this part?
No, absolutely not. Because neither Sarkar, Sarkar Raj or Sarkar 3 have any kind of interface in the stories. There is no relationship at all.
Tell us about the premise of Sarkar 3.
In every organisation, there are power centres like a top man, you will have some people whom you trust more than others. They won’t like it sometimes, it could be family members involved, old timers or it could be youngsters too. In the course of that, obviously, there will be a lot of internal politics which will always cause rifts in the company or organisation. And, how outside forces can take advantage of that. That is the most simplistically way I can say about the film.
There are many actors in this film. Was it a conscience decision to make it a multi-starrer film?
I think eventually it’s about what kind of interesting characters one has created and then you feel to justify the casting and what kind of face you want in the particular role. That is how it was thought actually.
On what basis did you cast Amit, Yami, Manoj and Jackie?
For Amit’s character, I wanted someone who is very cocky, arrogant guy who you would like immediately and will be intrigued about his edge. That’s what Amit Sadh is about. And Yami, because she has always been used like a young, pretty, beautiful and vulnerable girl. Then to see her in the space of Sarkar, I thought that would be very interesting. Manoj is kind of playing a wild politician, who is against Sarkar in a certain sense of the world. Jackie is playing a suave businessman who was a criminal long time back but has now become legitimate. But, he wants to work out a deal with Sarkar.
You recently interviewed Big B and the video went instantly viral. How difficult was it for you to direct or question a legendary star like Mr. Bachchan?
I think it’s about you really being in the control of the medium and you understanding the story. You should be able to answer any kind of questions posed by such a senior actor like Bachchan. Once you have that, it won’t have so much of difficulty in directing him.
You are one of the few celebrities who don’t think twice before posting anything on social media. Do you actually mean every tweet you post or is it just a way to get attention?
I think a lot before tweeting, I show it like I don’t, but I do. Sometimes I don’t mean it, sometimes I mean it and sometimes I like to provoke a reaction from people. I enjoy reactions from them.
Recently, a copyright violation was issued against you where Siddiqui Mushtaq Muhsin in his petition claimed that the film ‘Agyaat’ was based on him. What do you have to say about it?
These things, my office takes care of, I am not even aware of it. All things which are legal related, I am not even aware of any of them.
You applauded Baahubali 2 a lot on your Twitter page. Do you wish to make historical movies like that magnum opus?
I don’t think I have the patience required to undertake projects as huge as Baahubali. You need to spend a lot of time and years to make something empowering like that.
When do you begin shooting for Arrest? Is it based on encounter specialist Pradeep Sharma?
We haven’t thought of a date. But it should not be in more than a month or so. It is a completely fictional story.
Who is the actress opposite Abhishek in the movie? And when do you plan to release it?
Nothing has been confirmed yet.
