As book adaptations find their way to the big screen, yet another one in the list is the Harinder S. Sikka novel ‘Calling Sehmat’. This espionage thriller set in the backdrop of the 70s is based on the journey of a Kashmiri girl married to an army officer who continues to lead a life of complications as a spy, daughter and wife and will be directed by Meghna Gulzar.
Meghna Gulzar’s previous film Talvar too was based on a book as well as inspired by the true events of the Arushi Talwar murder case. On the other hand, the filmmaker describes that she has a sort of karmic connection with Calling Sehmat. When her last film Talvar was being made she was approached by Priti Sahani, president of Junglee Pictures for the film on the novel. But while it failed to materialize then, she was later once again approached by another producer for the same after a couple of months. When that didn’t go further either, she decided to go ahead with the film despite that. She had developed a good rapport with the writer through previous meetings and now decided to approach Priti once again about the film. But this time around, things fell into place.
As far as the casting and other details are concerned, it is yet to be finalized. As for the story, it wouldn’t feature the fight sequences or the actual war but the conditions that lead to the war. Since it is based on a true story again, Meghna promised that she would try to keep it as authentic as possible. She also added that she would take the help of her iconic poet and author father Gulzar for the film, once she finishes scripting.
